Breastfeeding Friendly Places Statement
Retailers, businesses and work places across the UK are showing their support to mothers by being ‘breastfeeding friendly’. Breastfeeding Friendly Places welcome breastfeeding all year round by meeting a set of criteria designed to make breastfeeding as easy as possible.
Breastfeeding Friendly Places will show a window sticker to let customers know they are ‘breastfeeding friendly’.
Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive of the NCT said;
“NCT welcomes support from businesses backing Breastfeeding Awareness Week by opening their doors to be breastfeeding friendly. It is a great help and will enable mothers to feel confident and comfortable when out and about with their babies.
The ‘You Can do it Here’ campaign run by local NCT branches across the UK has always encouraged businesses, restaurants and cafes to welcome breastfeeding mothers and provide more suitable facilities.
NCT surveys have found that 9 out of 10 mothers stop breastfeeding before they want to and two in three mothers have been subject to unsupportive comments or behaviour from other people when breastfeeding in public.
Research shows that the benefits of breastfeeding start right from day one, so every day of breastfeeding is a reason to feel proud.”
The NCT has trained breastfeeding counsellors locally available seven days a week to answer questions and provide support around baby feeding. Call NCT Breastfeeding Line on 0870 444 8708 or visit www.nct.org.uk.
Breastfeeding Friendly Places are part of a wider Department of Health campaign to promote breastfeeding, particularly targeting young mums during National Breastfeeding Awareness Week 2008.

Notes to Editors:
The NCT is the leading charity for pregnancy, birth and parenting in the UK. Every year we support thousands of people through this incredible life-changing experience, offering relevant information, reassurance and mutual support through our local branch networks, national telephone helplines and antenatal and postnatal courses.
The NCT is run by parents, for parents with over 70,000 members - our strength comes from the dedication of our volunteers, who work through our network of branches to provide local services, training and evidence-based information for parents, families and professionals. We are trusted and respected by health professionals and governments as an organisation that represents the needs of parents.
