NCT wins Charity Champion Award 2009

Last week, Baroness Julia Cumberlege was awarded the Children & Youth Champion Award for which she was nominated by the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) at the Charity Champion Awards 2009. Baroness Cumberlege’s dedication to the NCT and to reforming and improving maternity services has unequivocally benefited mothers and families throughout the UK.

The Charity Champion Awards recognise the Parliamentarian who has done the most to address issues concerning the safety and welfare of children and young people. MPs, Peers and representatives from the NCT attended the Charity Champion Awards ceremony.

Baroness Julia Cumberlege’s vast experience spans health policy from local to national government and she has been instrumental in creating government legislation. She is involved in a number of charities and is Patron of the NCT.

As Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity, she has brought with her invaluable experience and has helped it gain substantial parliamentary support. Her more recent work with the NCT and other organisations has made significant progress for choice within maternity services.

Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive, NCT, said; “The NCT is delighted that Baroness Cumberlege has won the Children & Youth Champion Award – this Award pays tribute to her hard work in improving maternity care for women. There is no doubt that in the future we will continue to see further outstanding achievements from Baroness Cumberlege and she will have the constant support of the NCT charity.”

For seven years the DODS Charity Champion Awards, in association with ePolitix and The House magazine, have portrayed a positive side to politics, acknowledging the significant difference politicians make to a diverse range of charitable causes through campaigning, legislation support and devoting their time and expertise. The Children & Youth Charity Champion Award was sponsored by EAGA.
