User involvement

The NCT thinks maternity services should meet the needs of their local community. To ensure that happens, users need to be involved in the decisions concerning the planning and delivery of their services. The NCT encourages our members to sit on committees that manage services for parents.

Maternity Service Liaison Committees (MSLCs) are the most common of these committees. In England, under Maternity matters PCTs are required to have an MSLC, and they exist in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland too. North of the border, A framework for maternity services says that Health Boards should make sure that services users’ views are recognised and reflected in the planning and provision of services.

You can find out more about what is involved in becoming a user representative.  If you would like to represent the NCT on a committee then email campaigns@nct.org.uk.

The NCT has a policy briefing on MSLCs and User Involvement, which you can download below.
