- Supporting new parents
Parents need support, information and guidance, as well as praise and encouragement as they learn new skills and adjust to responding to their baby’s needs and personality. The changes are particularly marked for those having a baby for the first time. Many parents have no extended family or friends who have recent experience of babycare living close by, so support from professionals and from local support networks for new parents is vital (see related documents below).
There are also a range of relevant NCT reviews of evidence on this topic, first published in the NCT’s quarterly continuing professional development journal New Digest. These inlude research on bed sharing and co-sleeping, baby sleeping behaviour and the development of secure attachment.
