NSF for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (Wales)
The National Service Framework (NSF) for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (Wales) was published in September 2005. In particular, Chapters 2 & 3 of the Welsh NSF, which focus on ‘Key Actions Universal To All Children’ and ‘Maternity Services’ are relevant to the work of the NCT. The Welsh NSF promotes normality and choice, breastfeeding, services for pregnant women from disadvantaged or minority groups and communities and better birth environments.

All Wales Clinical Pathway for Normal Labour
The clinical pathway for normal labour was published in 2004 and provides support for midwives who wish to practice evidence-based clinical care of the highest standard with minimal unnecessary intervention. It also provides a framework to maximise the opportunity for women in Wales to experience normal childbirth.

Welsh Breastfeeding Strategy
The Welsh Assembly Government's Breastfeeding strategy "Investing in a Better Start" was published in 2001.
The WAG appointed a Breastfeeding Co-ordinator for Wales, Sue Sky, in May 2003. Sue and her colleagues across Wales have made great strides in improving data collection, setting up a Breastfeeding Welcome scheme and encouraging implementation of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative, as well as many peer support schemes.
The Strategy is now under review.
An exert from the Strategy:
“In order to develop a sustainable strategy to promote breastfeeding in Wales a coordinated approach is needed involving Health Authorities, Local Authorities, the Voluntary Sector, communities and supported by the National Assembly for Wales.
Tackling inequalities and the causes of inequalities, including inequities of access, social exclusion and lack of Social Capital, are at the heart of the strategy. Long-term success will depend upon a shift in culture and attitudes, both
amongst the public and health professionals.”
